Your Game. Your Reel. Your Future.

When to Send Your Highlight Reel to College Coaches (Recruiting Timeline)

Timing is everything in recruiting. Send your reel too early and coaches cannot legally respond. Send it too late and rosters are already full. Here is the exact timeline for when to send your highlight reel based on your sport, division, and graduation year.

The General Rule: Junior Year is Prime Time

For most sports at the D1 level, the peak recruiting window is the summer before your junior year through the fall of your senior year. This is when coaches are actively filling their next recruiting class. But preparation should start much earlier — you want your reel ready before coaches start looking.

Football Recruiting Timeline

D1 football coaches start evaluating recruits in the spring of sophomore year. Your first reel should be ready by June before junior year. Update it with junior season film by November. D2 and D3 coaches recruit later — spring of junior year through senior fall is the main window. JUCO programs recruit year-round and are always looking for immediate impact players.

Basketball Recruiting Timeline

AAU and summer league season (June-July) is the biggest evaluation period for basketball. Have your reel updated with summer footage by August before junior year. College coaches cannot make official contact until June 15 after sophomore year (D1), but they are watching film much earlier. Send your reel before they reach out.

Lacrosse Recruiting Timeline

Lacrosse recruiting has gotten earlier and earlier. D1 programs may start identifying prospects in 8th and 9th grade. Have your first reel ready by the end of freshman year. Update it every season. D3 lacrosse recruits later — junior and senior year are the prime windows.

How Often to Update Your Reel

Update your highlight reel after every season. Coaches want to see recent film — a reel from 2 years ago tells them nothing about who you are now. After each season, swap out older clips for newer, better ones. Keep your total to 3-5 minutes even as you add new footage.

The Follow-Up Rule

Sending your reel once is not enough. Follow up 7-10 days after your initial email. If you have new film or stats, send an update. Coaches are busy and emails get buried. A polite follow-up shows initiative, not desperation. Three total contacts (initial + 2 follow-ups) is the sweet spot.
