GPA Requirements for College Athletes: NCAA, NAIA, and JUCO Minimums
You can have the best highlight reel in the country, but if your grades do not meet eligibility requirements, no college program can recruit you. Academic eligibility is non-negotiable. Here is exactly what GPA and test scores you need for each division.
IN THIS ARTICLE
NCAA Division I Requirements
D1 requires a minimum 2.3 GPA in 16 NCAA-approved core courses. You also need a qualifying SAT or ACT score on a sliding scale — a higher GPA means you need a lower test score, and vice versa. For example, a 2.3 GPA requires a 980 SAT, while a 3.0 GPA only needs a 620 SAT. You must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center (formerly the Clearinghouse) and have your transcripts sent directly.
NCAA Division II Requirements
D2 requires a minimum 2.2 GPA in 16 core courses with a qualifying test score on their own sliding scale. D2 requirements are slightly less strict than D1 but still require early planning. The 16 core courses must include 3 years of English, 2 years of math, 2 years of science, and additional academic electives.
NCAA Division III Requirements
D3 does not have NCAA eligibility requirements — each school sets its own admissions standards. However, D3 schools are often academically rigorous. Many D3 athletes have GPAs above 3.0 and strong test scores because these are selective academic institutions. Check each school's individual admissions requirements.
NAIA Requirements
NAIA requires two of three criteria: a minimum 2.0 GPA, a minimum 18 ACT or 970 SAT, or a top-half class rank. Meeting any two of these three makes you eligible. NAIA schools use the NAIA Eligibility Center for verification. The requirements are more accessible than NCAA D1 or D2.
JUCO: The Most Flexible Path
Junior colleges generally require only a high school diploma or GED for admission. There are no minimum GPA or test score requirements for athletic eligibility at most JUCOs. This makes JUCO an excellent option for athletes who need to improve their academics before transferring to a four-year school. Many JUCO programs have academic support staff specifically for athletes.
Start Early — Sophomore Year Is Not Too Soon
The biggest mistake student-athletes make is waiting until senior year to check their eligibility. By then, it may be too late to fix a low GPA or complete missing core courses. Start tracking your core courses in 9th grade. Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center in your junior year. Take the SAT or ACT early so you have time to retake if needed.
